The Linux Foundation’s CHAOSS project was created 7 years ago during a birds of a feather session at the LF Member Summit. It was created to be a gathering place where all members could explore paths through large amounts of inconsistently defined data about open source towards metrics that might, at its least ambitious, help to tell consistent stories about project sustainability. This LF project wrote software, gathered data, and defined metrics that helped members understand the health of their projects. This impact led to consistent communication about project health and shortly gave way to a Tsuamni of data and insight that enriched LF member understanding while also overwhelming us. One of the ways the CHAOSS project overcomes the data Tsunami now is by collecting sets of metrics that are more useful together using techniques from data science. This session will highlight the success of the CHAOSS project and how our work helps people use data science to monitor project participation, attract new committers, and build out their future contributor community.
