How do we select open source projects? Some technologists rely on news feeds, some rely on word of mouth, some rely on prior art and knowledge in an organization. Most recently, it has become a vital conversation; in organizations large and small; to strengthen the process of assessing risk and viability of open source software. OSPOs can help their organizations navigate these discussions and decisions. The CHAOSS community, jointly with TODO Group OSPO leaders, have rallied around this problem to create metrics, models, and conversations to more effectively measure the viability, risk profile, and security of applications ranging from academia to telecoms to FAANG. Every organization poses different problems, and many of them have overlapping or shared solutions. Join Dr. Dawn Foster (CHAOSS), Nithya Ruff (Amazon), Ashley Wolf (GitHub) and Matt Germonprez (University of Nebraska at Omaha/CHAOSS), as they discuss the approach, complications, failures, and successes of measuring viability and de-risking applications.
